  • WWII Watermanship Week: How to Protect Yourself Against the Creatures of the Sea by The Art of Manliness. Editor’s note: In 1944, the US War Department published FM 21-22, a manual on military watermanship. The manual covers everything a man needs to know to survive at sea, from how to properly abandon a sinking ship to how to stay alive in a lifeboat. This week we’ll be highlighting several of the manual’s sections; the information is both fascinating from a historical standpoint and useful for worst case scenarios.  FM 21-22 War Department Watermanship Manual, 1944 Protection Against Water Animals GENERAL. Some water animals attack man only in self-defense; others may attack if attracted by blood, shiny objects, and light colors such as that of a man’s skin. Don’t drag your hands or feet overboard. The best defense against water animals is to look for them and detour around them. Observe underwater, on the bottom of shoals, among rocks, and at the surface. Swim slowly and quietly. Keep your clothing on if dangerous fish are known to infest the water. Move away from any blood in the water. It is important to remain calm, especially when stung by water animals; their stings will wear away. SHARK. White shark — “man-eater.” a. Sharks are distributed widely but are most common in warm seas. They have long, round, slender bodies with the upper lobe of the tail fin longest, and with five distinct openings to the gills along the side of the head. The most dangerous sharks have unsymmetrical tails. The body normally measures not more than 11 feet. The mouth is large and armed with cutting teeth; the nose usually is conical, bluntly pointed, and protrudes well in front of the mouth. Sharks usually attack on the surface and are revealed by their fins, which break the water like a periscope. b. Defense against a shark attack consists in splashing, moving the arms and legs rapidly, and making a great deal of commotion underwater. Metallic noises such as striking a canteen under water are best. Avoid display of skin, underclothing, or shiny objects. The snout is the most sensitive part of the shark’s body; by striking a blow on the snout you may drive him away. Treat in the ordinary manner any wounds received. BARRACUDA. The barracuda is found only in the warm seas. It is a long, grayish, pikelike fish with long, pointed jaws lined with sharp teeth. It is about 6 feet long and usually is attracted by anything that moves but especially by light-colored or shiny objects. It attacks quickly from below the surface. Creating noise underwater may frighten it away. Treat in the ordinary manner any wounds received. STING RAY. a. Sting rays, found in all warm seas and in some fresh water rivers, are disk-shaped, flattened fishes with one or two long, barbed spines. The disk is made up of both body and fins. Sizes range from that of an ordinary dinner plate up to 10 feet across. The tail may be as long or longer than the disk. Since they conceal themselves in muddy or sandy flats, they are frequently stepped upon and lash out with their tails, driving the spine into the flesh and injecting a highly venemous substance. Treat wounds like snake bites. b. When walking in turbid or muddy water, poke ahead of you with a stick and slide your feet along. If stick or feet touch a hidden sting ray it will swim away. SAW-FISH. The saw-fish has a body similar to the shark’s and, in addition, a swordlike snout is armed with spines on the sides giving the impression of a large double-edged saw. The saw-fish may reach a length of from 10 to 20 feet but it is not vicious. It lives over sandy and muddy bottoms. The saw-fish can swing its saw back and forth with power enough to break a man’s leg. The most tender parts of the saw-fish are the areas around the eyes and at the base of the saw. Defense consists of striking area of eyes and avoiding the saw. MORAY EEL. The moray eels are found in all warm seas, especially in crevices about coral reefs. Most morays are brownish or blackish colored with peculiar patterns of varied spots. Some morays reach a length of 6 feet. A knife or spear may be used in defense against the moray. Keep your ha...

  • Chris Nitchen & Brady Mielnicki commit to junior hockey programs by USA Today High School Sports. C.J. Nitchen #20 – St. Louis Jr. Blues NA3HL commit KUSA — High school hockey players have the option to play competitive hockey after high school. A growing sport in the Rocky Mountain area, high school hockey is gaining traction in Colorado. Is playing for your high school good enough to advance you into higher levels of the sport? The Colorado high school student’s hockey resume doesn’t strictly need AAA club hockey (the highest form of club hockey prior to college and junior) experience to play at a higher level. A common option for hockey players after high school is to play junior hockey. Athletes between the ages of 16 and 20 years of age have the option to play Junior hockey develop their skills so they can advance to a higher league. Both Canada and the United States have a complex hierarchy of leagues divided into Tier I, Tier II, and Tier III — Tier I the more advantageous of the three. There are two premiere junior hockey leagues that are based in the United States: the United States Hockey League (USHL), a Tier I league, and the North American Hockey League (NAHL), a Tier II league. The US also has various leagues in Tier III: Brady Mieleneiki # 35 – Dallas Jr. Stars NA3HL commit Eastern Hockey League Metropolitan Junior Hockey League North American 3 Eastern Hockey League North American 3 Hockey League Northern Pacific Hockey League Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League United States Premier Hockey League All of these leagues are sanctioned by a greater governing body called USA Hockey. However, in the U.S., there is a junior league — the Western States Hockey League — governed by a group called the United Hockey Union instead of USA Hockey. The league is still considered equivalent to USA Hockey leagues in Tier III. Cherry Creek’s Chris Nitchen and Brady Mielenicki both committed to teams in the North American 3 Hockey League, a tier III league sanctioned by USA Hockey. Nitchen scored a goal and two assists for the Bruins in the state championship; he recorded eight goals and 16 assists last season. Brady Mielenicki was the net-minder for the Bruins throughout the season and the playoffs and recorded 414 saves in 21 games. Cherry Creek Bruins Hockey Coach, Jeff Mielenicki, said, “What I like to do with my team is stay active with Junior and college teams in promoting my players.” The players travel to tournaments in order to be seen by scouts of various Junior and college teams prior to high school graduation. “One of the great things Junior leagues are doing is developing players,” Jeff said. “NCAA coaches want a more mature athlete and they lean on Junior leagues to develop the player before recruitment.” Coach Mielnicki after state championship win – Photo by Jack Eberhard When both Chris and Brady enter college hockey, their Junior league will have made them faster, stronger and more mature players to increase their success and their level of competition in college. “Both have the competitive desire to play NCAA hockey,” Jeff said. “The first step is seeing the road you’re getting onto and second, both players were offered contracts prior to the draft so they can focus on getting faster and stronger.” Nitchen wants to make it to higher levels of hockey and is using Juniors to commit his lifestyle to hockey in hopes of making it to an NCAA team. “I chose to go to Juniors mostly because I want to play college hockey at some point. I’ll get more looks from college scouts in Juniors,” said Nitchen. He’s hoping to eventually advance to a higher tier of Junior hockey and from there to join any NCAA Division I program that will offer him a shot. In all sports, teams and leagues can be stepping stones. They develop skills in high competition with repetition. Junior leagues in hockey are just that, a stone on the path to college or a professional league. Jake Christofferson, former Monarch Coyote – ACHA Colorado State College may also be a stone. It is yet another opportunity for athletes straight out of high school to eventually find there way to a professional league. There are two...

It reads, in part: As part of this resolution, Mr. Rodriguez and the Yankees have agreed that a total of $3.5 million in charitable contributions will be made by the Club, with $1 million going to the following charities that have long enjoyed the support of one or both: the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, the Boys & Girls Club of Tampa, and Pitch In For Baseball; and $2.5 million going to the MLB Urban Youth Foundation, which will use the money to further programs and initiatives aimed at increasing youth participation in baseball, particularly in urban areas. Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr. will determine the initiatives to be supported by the $2.5 million contribution after consulting with Mr. Rodriguez, and taking into consideration the focus of Mr. Rodriguez’s past charitable contributions. Neither party will have any further comment on the specific terms of the agreement and both look forward to focusing their energies on winning another championship for Yankees fans. So there’s that. And from here, settling the dispute with a massive charitable donation looks like it works out pretty well for all involved. Neither the Yankees nor Alex Rodriguez needs $3.5 million as much as those charities do, and the league gets both a huge donation and a lot of attention for its efforts with the Urban Youth Foundation. So A-Rod and the Yanks get to move on with their weird, oft-strained partnership. The most important thing for them, right now, is that the Yankees are right in the thick of a wide-open AL East race and Rodriguez has been their best hitter this season. There’s still a lot of time for his age and his history of lower body injuries to catch up with him, but A-Rod is producing far beyond the diminished returns he produced while battling those injuries from 2011-2013. Again, it’s half a season, but it now looks like A-Rod’s apparent decline had more to do with his health than his ability, enough so that it’s reasonable to guess the year-long suspension in 2014 may have even helped him by providing him time to rest and recover. Rodriguez’s .887 OPS leads a Yankees team that’s third in the American League in the same stat. He has kept pretty quiet too, avoiding even the silliest of controversies that sometimes plague him and declining to discuss his dispute with the team over the money promised him when he signed the contract that keeps him bound to the Yankees. He’s essentially a mustache away from a perfect redemption. As for that: He said in May that he’d grow one, but noted that it could take a very long time. It’s nearly two months later now, and it still doesn’t look like there’s anything there. Maybe if you squint. (USA TODAY Sports Images) But we already know A-Rod sometimes shaves his legs, and who knows what lengths he might have gone to avoid regularly shaving his face? No judgments, just saying. And I want this badly enough that I’m willing to give A-Rod the benefit of the doubt on this one, which — hey, how about that?
